Diabetes represents one of the world’s largest and fastest growing epidemics. There are 3 million people with Type 1 Diabetes and 21 million people with Type 2 Diabetes in the US alone, and 15 million with Type 1 Diabetes and 285 million with Type 2 Diabetes worldwide.
All products for diabetes on the market today seek only to treat the symptoms and effects of diabetes. There are no approved products that address diabetes from a regenerative perspective; i.e., to restore the population of islet cells that supply vital hormones for metabolic homestasis. An islet cell regenerating therapeutic would truly represent an innovative approach to treating diabetes.
FT201 is a recombinant version of a naturally-occurring human protein. FT201 has been shown in various rodent models of diabetes to induce islet neogenesis and the formation of insulin-producing beta cells via natural tissue remodeling mechanisms. Fate is currently optimizing selected protein forms and testing these forms in animal models of diabetes. Fate’s FT201 preclinical development program is currently focused on Type 1 Diabetes with a view to later expanding our experience in models of Type 2 Diabetes.
